Steve Irwin - In Memorium

I just had to post something following the recent tragic death of Steve Irwin, The Crocodile Hunter.

We didn't know him personally, of course, but he is someone who has been in our living room, via the TV, almost every day for the past several years.  And, strange as it may seem to some people, we feel like we almost knew him.  Alex loves watching his programs & I'm sure Alyssa will, too, when she gets a little older.

His tireless enthusiasm & down-to-Earth attitude came through in everything he said & did.  You could tell immediately he came on the screen, that he loved what he did & loved the animals he came into contact with just as much as his own family.  And in his own words, he was the proudest Dad in the world.

As I write this, I am watching Steve & Terri's Antarctic adventure & Steve pretending to be a penguin sliding on the snow on his belly & it reminds me of just how much fun Steve seemed to have while still teaching us all about animals & conservation.

He will be greatly missed by us & by the many, many other Croc Hunter fans around the world.

There is at least one charity that has been set up in Steve's memory (& I know the Discovery Channel here, in America, has said they will be setting one up too, to be nicknamed "The Crikey Fund" after Steve's "Crikey!" catchphrase) - it is called Wildlife Warriors Worldwide, it is run by the folks who worked with Steve at his Australia Zoo in Queensland, Australia & it is dedicated to saving animals around the world.  You can learn more here

There is also a conservation book written for children, available from http://www.juicycoppertoes.com/index.html
The authors have pledged that, for the month of September, ALL PROCEEDS from the sales of their book "Juicy Coppertoes - Who Goes With That Nose" will be donated to Steve's Wildlife Warriors fund.  I think Steve would have liked that idea - you get to inspire your kids to learn about the environment, animals & conservation and you get to make a donation to a great cause.

update on the update

Alyssa is crawling!!  Yep, she is finally truly mobile.  (I know - we're in trouble now!)  And already, after only 2 days, she is fast!  And busy!  And very proud of herself - she is just grinning the whole time she is crawling - it's really funny.

Update on the kiddos

Let's see....  Alyssa is walking...  No, not really - I'm kidding!

As of last Friday (I think!), she started getting up to a sitting position by herself and as soon as she accomplished that, she started working on crawling, pulling up & other amazing acrobatics.  She can already crawl backwards & has been seen, on the rare occasion, to take a few crawling steps forward before giving up & lying down on her tummy to reach for the object of her desire instead.  She can also pull herself up to her knees while she holds onto the sofa (she seems quite proud of that one!).  And she likes to get up on her hands & feet and stick her bottom in the air - not sure what that's about but she thinks it's really funny!    She has 6 teeth so far - 2 on the top & 4 on the bottom & yes, they are really sharp!  I don't know what she weighs but her well-baby check-up is next week, so I'll let you all know then...

Alex is growing up into the holy terror I hear his Daddy was ...  Most of the time, he is pretty good but he sure can throw a tantrum when he puts his mind to it!  Getting control of the biting, hitting, kicking, etc. is also proving to be somewhat of a challenge but we're working on it...   I do a homeschool curriculum with him (Hands on Homeshooling) for 2 year olds - he is doing really well at that & loving every minute of it.  Just last Friday (it was a day of accomplishments all round!), he learned to count to 5 & we started working on his Alphabet Book, containing pictures of things that start with different letters.  So far, we have just covered the letter A & this week, we are learning about the lettter B.  He knows his shapes & colours really well & can do balancing, jumping & forward rolls (somersaults?) like a true gymnast!  Probably his favourite thing to do is to ride his tricycle (that his Aunt Debbie gave him)  outside, ringing the bicycle bell his Aunt Annette gave him.  He also loves to go visit his Nana & Papa, who spoil him rotten, but then he hates to come home again...   Oh, and he has a girlfriend already - she lives across the road, she is 7 & her name is Shae.

Last week, I took Alex, Alyssa & Shae out to the annual County Fair.  We saw & petted all the animals - pigs (I think they scared Alex a bit because they were quite loud), cows & calves (Alex got his hand licked by a calf - I think that surprised him a bit! LOL), goats, sheep, horses, rabbits, ducks & chickens (although the poultry missed out on the petting part of things).  I think it was the 1st time Shae had been up close to farm animals like that, never mind petting them, so she got to expand her education a little bit, too!  We finished off with funnel cakes (another 1st for Shae!) & headed home... tired, hungry, dusty, hot & sweaty but happy!

Cookies, anyone?

I found this recipe yesterday, while I was continuing my search for the perfect cookie recipe.  I've tried 3 different recipes so far & the last 2, although good, were still not the one I am looking for.  (I want the yummy chewy ones like you get from the bakery section in the grocery store)

Anyway, I'm getting a little off track here   Here is the one I found yesterday.
There is one unusual ingredient &, for that reason, I don't think I'll be trying this one...  But if anyone does, please let me know how it turns out, won't you?!

Supercalafragalisticexpialidocious!
I just rented the Mary Poppins movie for Alex (he loves it, by the way! ) & now I've got this daft song stuck in my head...

Supercalafragalisticexpialidocious!
Even though the sound of it is something quite atrocious,
If you say it loud enough. you'll always sound precocious!
